The first gauge that we recommend will be a Boost/PSI/Vacuum Gauge. This gauge is used to monitor boost and diagnose potential issues with your turbo system such as; boost leaks and overboosts. Too much or too little of anything can be an issue, this rule of thumb definitely applies to boost gauges. Neglecting your gauges can lead to a number of issues including piston failure. Therefore, a boost gauge is recommended for tuning as well as daily driving applications. Additionally, there are two types of gauges they are; analog boost gauges and digital boost gauges.

A digital boost gauge is our preferred choice. Digital boost gauges yield a much easier install in regards to the wire which is much thinner than a vacuum hose, these hoses are often passed up due to taking up excessive space in the engine bay. The digital gauge communicates with a sending unit which is typically attached or placed near the boost source. The sending unit sends  a signal to the boost gauge housing which converts the signal and displays the readout on the gauge face.

An analog boost gauge interprets how much boost the turbocharger is making by using a vacuum hose which is connected to the boost source. The reading acquired is then displayed on the analog gauge face. Below is a glowshift boost gauge that we use for our turbocharged applications.

Similar to the the boost gauges, digital oil pressure gauges and analog oil pressure gauges are going to be your two options.

Again, our preferred gauge type of choice is hands down the digital style gauge. Digital oil pressure gauges in our opinion are superior due to the fact that you do not have to route an oil feed line into the cabin of your vehicle.

We recommend that you stay away from analog oil pressure gauges, they typically come equipped with a low quality, plastic hose. This poor construction usually made out of weak brittle plastic will wear and tear over time causing the hose to break and crack potentially leaving you with inaccurate readings. From there you may experience a multitude issues. With the digital oil pressure gauge you won’t have to worry about this.

Wideband air fuel ratio gauges are without a doubt the most important gauge for a turbocharged vehicle, indeed a worthwhile investment. While these gauges are primarily useful during the tuning process. They may also yield useful data in regards to assisting diagnosis of exhaust leaks and weak points in the power band after initial tuning is completed.

A wideband air fuel ratio gauge is used to read the stoichiometry of the air/gasoline mixture in the combustion chamber after it’s burned to create power. Optimal AFR is 14.7:1, or 14.7 air molecules to one fuel molecule. Anything above 14.7 is going to be considered lean and anything below that amount will be considered rich.
